First Metro Detroit Security Councils a Success
The Metro Detroit Model United Nations Organization held its first Metro Detroit Security Councils at Macomb Dakota High School. With 7 schools competing and nearly 100 delegates the event was a success. As an end of season conference, we decide to depart from our typical MeDMUN orthodoxy on offer team and delegate awards. The Best Delegation awards were won by Clay High School and Lake Orion High School.
The delegates were able to debate in 4 Committees, two General Assembly committees, modeled on our traditional GA’s at MeDMUN, a Security Council, and a Marvel Committee, a fantasy committee. The General Assemblies were particularly competitive as delegates were trying to protect world heritage sites from environmental and man-made destruction and avoid a food crisis that threatened to destabilize the food market and caused a coup in Turkey. Meanwhile, across the hall delegates in the Security Council sought to bring peace to the Korean Peninsula, but were thwarted by diplomatic maneuvering that saw Kim Jong-Il’s sister seize power and install a new regime with her as the Supreme Leader. Finally, our Marvel Committee saw the mutants pushed to the brink of destruction and hunted by the human governments for violations of the Sakovia accords. Luckily after intense negotiations, they were able to bring peace to the Marvel World and forge a better future for both mutants and humans.
We would like to thank all of our competing schools as well as Dakota High School for helping us host the event. MeDSeC brought together a mix of experienced delegates and first-timers looking to try Model UN out before the summer, but all in all the experience was positive and we look forward to seeing everyone at MeDMUN V and MeDSeC II in 2019.
