Mitchell Dennis and Jordan Phillips
Secretary General for MeDMUN IV and Undersecretary General for the General Assemblies
Over the past year we have engaged our staff members as well as attending schools in a conversation about the direction of our organization and it was suggested that we extend MeDMUN to a second day, or we host another conference at the end of the competitive season. After consultation with our board members and a vote by our staff members, we are excited to announce that we will host 2 conferences in 2018, MeDMUN IV on January 6th and Metro Detroit Security Councils (MeDSeC I) in May. MeDSeC I will be tentatively held on Saturday May 18th, 2018.
MeDSeC will focus on participation for new delegates and an engaging and fun experience for experienced delegates. Above all, we want MeDSeC to serve as an introduction for delegates who are potentially interested in becoming more involved in Model UN. Often times after your competitive season finishes, kids will begin to hear about Model UN and ask how to get involved, but given that conferences are not until the following autumn, it can be difficult to retain these students on your team. By offering an inclusive and competitive environment, we hope to engage these kids in Model UN and allow all of the students involved in Model UN to hit the ground running in the fall.
The format for MeDSeC will be similar to MeDMUN. We will provide research guides, on-site pre-conference training sessions as well as operate MeDSeC under the same parliamentary procedure structure. The most significant difference between MeDMUN and MeDSeC will be that MeDSeC will feature committees and topics that we have simulated in the past, allowing our staff members to reengage with their past topics and giving delegates the opportunity to learn about a topic from a new perspective. To ensure that delegates are provided the most up to date information, we will revise our previous background guides and include an update paper to explain how the situation has changed since that topic was simulated.
We are excited to start on this journey with all of you. Registration schedule and simulated committees for MeDSeC I will be available in January 2018.
